Hütten & Paläste wurde 2005 von Nanni Grau und Frank Schönert in Berlin gegründet. Unser Arbeitsfeld umfasst die Planung und Realisierung experimenteller Architekturen für urbane Wohn- und Lebensformen. Dabei stehen Lösungen für extreme oder besondere Standorte und Bauaufgaben im Vordergrund.
Es geht bei allen unseren Projekten um die Herstellung aktiver Verbindungen zwischen Innen- und umgebendem Außenraum. Wir begreifen Gebäude als offene Systeme, die in ständigem Austausch mit ihrer physischen und metaphysischen Umgebung stehen.
Minimaler Ressourceneinsatz
In den letzten 15 Jahren haben wir vielfältige prototypische Gebäude entwickelt und realisiert, die sich mit verschiedensten Fragestellungen der Architektur auseinandersetzen, die einen gezielten und minimalen Einsatz von Ressourcen anstreben und durch ihre Offenheit möglichst langfristig nutzbar sind.
Die Reduktion auf das Wesentliche in Bezug auf Raumangebote, Technik, Konstruktion und Ressourcen, sowie das Bauen mit Holz bestimmen unsere Entwürfe.
Prozessoffene robuste Architekturen
Wir arbeiten häufig in kooperativen Organisationsformen aus Nutzergruppen, Entwicklern und Grundstückseigentümern, in die wir als Architekten eingebunden sind.
Dabei spielen die gemeinschaftliche Programm- und Projektentwicklung, alternative Finanzierungsmodelle und die Mitbestimmung der Nutzer eine bedeutende Rolle.
Die aus den Planungsprozessen resultierenden Gebäude müssen häufig mit vielen Variablen umgehen und offen für Anpassungen sein. Veränderung ist daher ein unseren Planungen inhärentes Prinzip.
Hierfür entwickeln wir robuste Architekturen, die durch eingeschriebene Regelwerke Potentiale der Anpassung an zukünftige Nutzerbedarfe (Partizipation) z.B. Möglichkeitsfelder für den Selbstbau bereitstellen.
In unseren architektonischen Konzepten betrachten wir grundsätzlich den gesamten Lebenszyklus der Gebäude.
Parallel zur architektonischen Praxis unterrichten wir seit 2007 in wechselnden Konstellationen an verschiedenen Hochschulen. Seit 2021 Professur für Bauen im Bestand – Architektur der Transformation an der Hochschule München. 2017-18 Gastprofessur Formen partizipativer Stadtentwicklung/ Stadtmanagement an der Uni Kassel. 2007-17 am Lehrstuhl für Entwerfen und Baukonstruktion bei Prof. Bettina Götz an der Universität der Künste Berlin und werden regelmäßig zu internationalen Ausstellungen, Vorträgen und zu Jurys eingeladen.
Hütten & Paläste was founded in 2005 by Nanni Grau and Frank Schönert in Berlin. Our field of work includes the design and construction of experimental architectures for urban living and ways of life. Paramount to our work is finding solutions for extreme or special sites and building assignments.
Our designs are determined by reducing to the essential, with regard to the available space, technology, construction and resources, as well as building with wood.
Building on our years of working with single-room dwellings, we are researching and working on adaptive structures and modules that can react to economic and temporal changes.
Users should be enabled to actively adjust buildings to their changing needs, or to choose between a variety of options. Of decisive importance is the creation of possibilities and opportunities, which are defined in accordance with guidelines and inscribed into the respective spaces and structures.
In recent years, we have frequently worked in cooperative organizational structures consisting of user groups, developers and property owners, in which we are involved as architects. The building programme, joint project development, alternative financing models and user participation all play a major role in this.
Central to all of our projects is the production of active connections between the interior space and the outdoor environment. We understand buildings as open systems that are in constant exchange with their physical and metaphysical surroundings.
Parallel to our architectural practice, we have taught in various constellations: since 2021 professorship for architecture of transformation, 2017-18 visiting Professor for urban participatory planning at the University of Kassel, 2007-17 scientific staff at the Department of Design and Building Construction with Prof. Bettina Götz at the University of the Arts Berlin, and are regularly invited to participate in international exhibitions, lectures and juries.
